General:
Perennial herb from a somewhat woody stem-base; stems 1 to several, clustered, erect or ascending, 20-50 cm tall, slender, simple or branched above, green or purplish, sparsely hairy below, minutely hairy to long-silky-hairy or cobwebby above.
Leaves:
Alternate, linear to lance-linear, 2-8 cm long, narrowly long-tapering to the sharp tips, entire or occasionally with a pair of slender lateral lobes, finely hairy on both surfaces.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a prominently bracted, terminal, ultimately elongate spike, the bracts rose-pink to violet-purple, oblong or oval to lanceolate, usually with a pair of short linear lateral lobes, sometimes entire, minutely hairy or with long-hairy margins; corollas 15-20 (25) mm long, 2-lipped, the upper lip beak-like, coarse-hairy, green with wide, smooth, purplish margins, 4-6 mm long, shorter than the tube and about 2 times as long as the prominent, violet-purple, 3-lobed lower lip; calyces coloured like the bracts, coarse-hairy towards the base, minutely hairy above, 13-20 mm long, 2-lobed, these primary lobes again cleft into 2 short segments; stamens 4.
Fruits:
Capsules, 8-11 mm long; seeds many, the seed-coats loose and net-veined.

Habitat / Range

Swamps, streamsides, riverbars, shores and wet meadows in the montane zone; infrequent in extreme NE BC; N to AK, YT and NT and E to W PQ.
